dr. Andrea Balbo

Andrea Balbo is full professor of Latin at the Department of Humanities of the University of Turin and Visiting Professort of Latin at the Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano (CH). His research focuses on many topics:  among them Roman oratory and declamation of the imperial age; Cicero, Seneca, late antique writers (Ausonius, Macrobius, Rutilius Namatianus); reception of Greek and Latin authors: relationship between ancient Eastern and Western thought; Latin language and literature teaching methods with particular attention to multimedia applications and to digital humanities.

He is co-founder of the SIAC and directs the series Roma Sinica for De Gruyter and the projects SERICA (Sino-European Religious Intersections in Central Asia. Interactive Texts and Intelligent Networks) and  Classica Serica. Among his publications, editions of fragments of Roman oratory in the age of Augustus (2007 2nd ed.) and Tiberius (2007), studies on Roman oratory  (Ch. Gray, A. Balbo, R. M. A. Marshall, and C. E. W. Steel (eds.), Reading Republican Oratory. Reconstructions, Contexts, Receptions, 2018), volumes on reception studies (as Accogliere l’antico. Ricerche sulla ricezione della letteratura latina e sulla storia degli studi classici, 2020) and about the relationships between Eastern and Western thought (A. Balbo, J. Ahn, K. Kim (eds.), Empire and Politics in the Eastern and Western Civilizations, 2022; A. Balbo, J. Ahn (eds.). Confucius and Cicero. Old Ideas for a New World, New Ideas for an Old World, 2020)
